This year was our 5th round of collaboration with Telugu Association of North America (TANA) to promote original children’s stories in Telugu. We called for entries for picture stories for children under 10 and for novels for children over 10 years.
An overwhelming 63 picture stories & 41 novels came our way! We thank our judges Dr. M Bhupal, Ms. Manjuluri Krishnakumari, Ms. G Maheswari and Ms. V.S. Pavithra for going through them all. Five stories were selected in each category.
The book release was planned for August 9th, 2025 at Oxford Grammar High School, and we crossed our fingers for good weather in a season of excess rainfall! Two more books were also released on the same occasion, making it a mighty dozen!
We thank everyone who attended the event and made it a success – our esteemed guests (Acharya T. Gangadhar garu, Ravi Potluri garu, M.Vedakumar garu, C.S. Rambabu garu, Vasireddy Naveen garu, Haripriya Batthula garu), our authors and illustrators, friends from the media, family members and well-wishers. Thank you for encouraging children’s literature.
Our collaboration with TANA has been highly impactful in terms of encouraging original stories in Telugu. So far, this collaboration has resulted in 26 novels and 33 picture stories being published! A bunch of them are still currently available – you can find them in this link.
If you happened to be taking a stroll along Tarnaka’s Street number 1 on June 29th at 11 AM, you would have heard this enthusiastic chorus of the well-known rhyme!
These were the voices, not of children, but about a dozen grown-ups attending the storytelling workshop conducted by Mr. Ravi of Katha Pathasala. Aimed at parents, grandparents, teachers, and anyone looking to better engage children through stories – this was a first for Manchi Pustakam! Naturally, we were a bit nervous when we made the announcement. But registrations came in fast and we had more than we could accommodate! (They would make it the second workshop in July)
With about 44 participants across three sessions in June and July, we consider this a great start to hopefully more!

Good children’s literature is necessary for Telugu’s health.

Tell us a little bit about this changing Telugu-reading ability. What is your sense?
The picture is a complicated one, is it not? On the one hand, we have the ASER {Annual Status of Education Report] surveys telling is that a large proportion of 5th and 7th graders in government and low-fee paying private schools are not able to read even a 2nd grade Telugu text. On the other hand, there is the situation of Telugu students in high fee-paying English-medium schools. Although they may speak Telugu at home, Telugu reading is disappearing from their lives. Their exposure to written Telugu is very limited. These children are struggling to read even a 50-page Telugu novella; but they will read a 500-page Harry Potter novel in English with ease!
An unhurried chat with VedikaTalks about a wide variety of topics, beginning with Bala Sahithi being the foundation of Manchi Pustakam, our trust objectives, creating resources (in the form of engaging stories) for parents who wish for their children to learn and read Telugu, going against the grain in terms of book selection policies etc.
K.Suresh talks in detail about the various facets of picture stories, the genres and deeper meaning of folktales, the beauty of Soviet children’s books, and the fascination parents continue to have with ‘moral stories’.
There is also a discussion about the existing schooling system, our efforts to bring forth books regarding alternative schooling systems, and some stories that have left a lasting impression. The talk ends with some questions from listeners.

రైతు నేస్తం మే 2024 సంచికలో ”మంచి పుస్తకం” 20 ఏళ్ళ వేడుక గురించి వచ్చిన ప్రత్యేక వ్యాసం వచ్చింది.
This is probably our favourite description of the ’20 years of Manchi Pustakam’ event that took place on April 27th, 2024. Excerpt from the article:
ఊకదంపుడు ఉపన్యాసాలు లేవు. ఊరించే స్నాక్స్, లంచ్ మాత్రమే ఉన్నాయి. ఊహకు పదునుపెట్టే పుస్తకాలు ఉన్నాయి.
మీరు నమ్మరు. అక్కడికి వెళ్ళటానికి తార్నాక మెట్రో దిగి ఆటో నడిపే డ్రైవర్ ని సంప్రదిస్తే ఒకటే మాటన్నాడు… “పిల్లల పుస్తకాల కోసమేనా.. రండి పొద్దున్నుంచి చాలామందిని దింపాను” అన్నాడు. వెళ్లి చూస్తే, సందడంతా అక్కడే ఉంది… పిల్లలు, పెద్దలు కలిసిపోయి ఉన్నారు. బిస్కెట్లు, ఉడకబెట్టిన వేరుశనక్కాయలు, అరటి కాయలు, జామకాయలు తింటూ అటుఇటు పరిగెత్తే పిల్లలతో ఎంతో సందడిగా ఉంది ప్రాంగణమంతా. యూట్యూబ్ ఛానెల్ వాళ్ళ సందడి ఒకపక్క.. తీరిగ్గా, ఓపిగ్గా పుస్తకాలను పరిశీలిస్తూ పెద్దవాళ్ళు, వారితో కలిసి కొంచెం పెద్దపిల్లలు. ఇలా ఆట, పాటతో సందడిగా ఉదయం పది గంటల నుంచి కిటకిటలాడుతూ సేంట్ ఆన్స్ జెనరలేట్ కిలకిలలాడింది.
పిల్లల పుస్తకాలు ఎవరు చదువుతారు అన్న సంశయాన్ని కొంతైనా పటాపంచలు చేసింది “మంచి పుస్తకం” ఇరవై ఏళ్ల పండగ అనిపించింది.

The article also follows Suresh’s journey that began in a middle class agricultural household, to his current role in publishing children’s books in Telugu. Inclined towards agriculture since a young age, he speaks about the influence of MG Jackson ‘ హరిత విప్లవం ‘, about PhD scholar Gaya Prasad and Mr. Anil Sadgopal (of the non profit organization Kishore Bharathi) in shaping his views about alternative agricultural practices.
After completing his postgraduation, he returned to Andhra Pradesh to pursue a job as a journalist:
స్వరాష్ట్రానికి రావాలన్నా ఆకాంక్ష ముందు నుంచీ ఉంది. వివిధ పుస్తకాలు మొదటి నుంచి నన్ను బాగా ప్రభావితం చేసేవి. మధ్య ప్రదేశ్ నుంచి విజయవాడ రాగానే జర్నలిస్టుగా పనిచేయాలని అనుకున్నాను. ఈలోపు ఈనాడులో ‘ రైతే రాజు ‘ లో పనిచేసే అవకాశం వచ్చింది. తెలుగు భాష, అనువాదంలో నా నైపుణ్యం అక్కడే రూపుదిద్దుకున్నాయి. ప్రగతిశీల సాహిత్యం, పెద్దవాళ్ళ సాహిత్యానికి ప్రత్యేక సంస్థలు ఉన్నాయి. పిల్లల సాహిత్యానికి అలాంటి ప్రత్యేక ఏర్పాటు లేదని గుర్తించాం.
Noticing the gap in publishing Telugu children’s literature, four friends (Subbayya, Bal Reddy, Rajendra Prasad and Suresh) started ‘Bala Sahiti’ in 1990. For about a decade, they worked on this passion project (while pursuing their regular jobs). The work done by Bala Sahiti would be the foundation for Manchi Pustakam, beginning in 2002. After a 14 year stint in a government job, and the encouragement provided at WASSAN (Watershed Support Services and Activities Network), Suresh ventured into the world of children’s books full-time.
Since the beginning, Manchi Pustakam went about their work in an unconventional way:
పిల్లలు అనేసరికి చాలా మందికి నీతి చెప్పాలని బలంగా ఉంటుంది. దేశభక్తి చెప్పాలని ఉంటుంది. భావి పౌరులుగా సమతారాజ్య నిర్మాతలుగా తీర్చిదిద్దాలని కూడా ఉంటుంది. అయితే, నా ఉద్దేశంలో మొట్టమొదటి కర్తవ్యం, పిల్లల్లో పుస్తకాలపై ప్రేమ పెంచడం. చక్కటి బొమ్మలతో, ఆసక్తి కలిగించే కథలతో, ఊహాశక్తిని పెంచే కల్పనలతో పిల్లల పుస్తకాలు ఉండాలి. ఇటువంటి పుస్తకాలు తీసుకురావటానికి ‘బాలసాహితి’ రోజుల నుంచి ఎదురీదటమే మా అనుభవం. ఈసోపు కథలును టాల్స్టాయ్ తిరిగి రాసినప్పుడు, వాటి చివర్లో ఉండే నీతిని తీసేసారు. నీతి ప్రసక్తి లేని ఈసోపు కథలు ఒక్క ‘మంచి పుస్తకం’ వద్ద మాత్రమే లభిస్తాయి.

ఏదైనా సంస్థకు బయటకి కనిపంచే ముఖం ఒక్కటే ఉండొచ్చు. అయితే, దానికి సహకరించే వాళ్ళ సంఖ్య వందల్లో ఉంటుంది. మంచి పుస్తకం ద్వారా మాకు నచ్చిన పని, సంతోషాన్నిచ్చేది చేయగలుగుతున్నానని నమ్మకంగా చెప్పగలను. పుస్తక ప్రచురణలో చేయాల్సింది ఇంకా ఎంతో ఉంది.
