మంచి పుస్తకం 20 వసంతాల వేడుక!

Manchi Pustakam was set to celebrate 20 years of being a registered public trust in April of 2024. We started talking about planning an event for it, about 5-6 months in advance. In January, we began to outline the key messages we wanted to put forth.
When the first round of invites went out on 2nd March, the excitement kicked in!
The days before the event were as busy as could be! We were creating and editing posters (about 65 in all!), getting special bookmarks printed for the occasion, scheduling storytelling sessions, making arrangements for lunch/refreshments, stationary shopping and more…all the while publishing new books! Our to-do list seemed to be getting longer by the minute!
We sent out a second invite with the program details a few days prior to the event :
And soon enough, the D-day arrived! We had the posters set up in the main hall, and book sales in a smaller hall across the corridor. The last couple of hours went by in a flash – but we were so grateful for the many friends who showed up early to help us out with last minute arrangements. And once the first guests started arriving, the day just kept getting bigger and better! Here are a few snaps, taken early in the day:
The heart of what we do – the children! So, of course we had to have a kids corner where they could draw, colour and read. We also had two storytelling sessions organized – Sailaja Vissamsetty garu & Bhoomika Theatre Group – who enthralled everyone!
The response of our friends who came to celebrate with us was beyond all our expectations. And the day was nothing short of festive! A few highlights:
Though the occasion was Manchi Pustakam completing 20 years, we want to reiterate that it was only due to the efforts of innumerable people over the past 35 years that we are here today. This includes (but is not limited to) our families, friends, partners, contributors, service providers, well-wishers and volunteers. We acknowledge our gratitude to each of you!
ఈ ప్రయాణంలో జత కలిసిన, ప్రోత్సహించిన ఎందరో శ్రేయోభిలాషులు ఉండటం వల్లనే ఏ ఇబ్బందులు లేకుండా ఈ ప్రయాణం సాగింది. అందరికీ హృదయపూర్వక నమస్సుమాంజలులు.

ఏది బాల సాహిత్యం అని చెప్పడానికి నిర్దిష్ట ప్రమాణం ఏంటి?
భాగ్యలక్ష్మి: బాలలు అంటే 0-16 సంవత్సరాల వరకు ఉంటారు. వీళ్లు వివిధ ఆర్థిక, సామాజిక వర్గాలకు చెందిన వాళ్లు. వయస్సును బట్టి బొమ్మల సంఖ్య, ఫాంట్ సైజ్లలో తేడాలు ఉంటాయి. ఇక కంటెంట్ విషయానికి వస్తే వైవిధ్యానికి అంతు ఉండదు. తల్లిదండ్రుల మధ్య ఘర్షణ ఉండే కుటుంబ నేపథ్యం, ఆడపిల్లల వేధింపులతో మొదలుకుని మురికివాడల పిల్లల బొమ్మల కథల వరకు అన్నీ పిల్లల పుస్తకాలే. ఏ పుస్తకం ఎవరికి, ఎందుకు నచ్చుతుందో, ఎలా ప్రభావితం చేస్తుందో మనకి తెలియదని మంచి పుస్తకం బలంగా నమ్ముతుంది. సాధ్యమైనన్ని పుస్తకాలు పిల్లలకు అందుబాటులో ఉంచటమే మన పని.
We also discuss some publishing challenges in our 20 year journey, some memorable experiences, and what our focus is on next.
ఈ ప్రయాణంలో పరిపరి తలుచుకునే ఇష్టం సందర్భాల గురించి చెప్పండి?
భాగ్యలక్ష్మి: విభవసు అని ఒక అబ్బాయి చిన్నప్పటి నుంటి హెచ్బిఎఫ్లో మా స్టాలులో కూర్చుని సైన్స్ పుస్తకాలు చదువుకునేవాడు. తెలుగులో చదవటం వల్ల కాన్సెప్ట్స్ చాలా వరకు అర్థం అయ్యాయని, తోటి విద్యార్థులకు అనుమానాలు ఉంటే వివరించగలిగేవాడినని, తద్వారా ఎంతో నేర్చుకున్నానని విభవసు చెప్పాడు. ఆ కారణంగానే యాస్ర్టో ఫిజిక్స్లో ఆసక్తి ఏర్పడిందనీ చెప్పాడు. ఎంతో సంతోషం కదా!
హైదరాబాదు పుస్తక ప్రదర్శన జరుగుతున్నప్పుడు ఆఫీసు మూసివేస్తాం. ఆ సమయంలో నల్లగండ్లలోని తల్లిదండ్రుల దగ్గరకు అమెరికా నుండి వచ్చిన ఒక తల్లి తన కొడుకుతో ఆఫీసుకు వచ్చింది. ఆఫీసు మూసి ఉండటంతో అంతటి ఎండలో బుక్ ఫెయిర్కి వాళ్లు వచ్చారు. అక్కడికి రాగానే తనకి పరిచయం ఉన్న ‘కోటయ్య కట్టిన ఇల్లు’ కనపడటంతో దానిని తీసుకుని ఆ బాబు కింద కూర్చుని దాంట్లో మునిగిపోయారు. పెద్దవాళ్లు కూడా పిల్లలతో సమానంగా పుస్తకాలు చూసి ఆనందపడుతుంటే అవే మాకు ఆనంద క్షణాలు.

Interview> The New Indian Express – Celebrating 20 years of storytelling

A chat with Ms.Shreya Veronica from The New Indian Express – about noticing the dearth of Telugu children’s books in the late 80s, which sparked Bala Sahithi to be formed. What started off as a passion project, soon took the shape of Manchi Pustakam, a public trust registered in 2004.
We discuss why we stuck to publishing and promoting Telugu language books:
The need for Telugu books was there. Until a particular time like the 80s, there were magazines, books and translations. I believe that in the 60s and 70s, all world literature was in Telugu in various publication houses. The houses focusing primarily on Telugu books were not there and that is the reason we stuck to the language.
Here is P.Bhagyalakshmi talking about an often overlooked aspect in getting children to want to read books:
I would request parents to leave the child to select books. We have seen that in so many exhibitions, the parents buy the books. Parents are buying from their own perspective but not from the child’s perspective. If you leave a child, even a one-year-old kid would select an age-appropriate book, just by looking at them. You have to give the freedom to the child to take their books so that they can enjoy the book. Many parents feel that the child might tear the book and we might insist them to buy the book. But in our experience, no child has ever torn a book here. I tell parents that we are not going to insist on taking the book if the child tears it by mistake.

An interview with ఈనాడు, sharing some highlights of Manchi Pustakam’s 20 year journey.
We chat about how Bala Sahithi laid the foundation for Manchi Pustakam, and how starting the publishing journey with translations (Soviet Children’s books, books by Sutayev) worked wonders for us. We also talk about some of our special efforts to promote reading in Telugu (like our set of 50 story cards and Pustakalato Sneham series), and about joint publications and collaborating with TANA to promote original Telugu literature for children.

అందుకే, పిల్లలలో పుస్తకాల పట్ల ప్రేమ, తెలుగులో పఠనా సామర్థ్యం పెంచటం ప్రధాన ఉద్దేశంగా మంచి పుస్తకం సంస్థ పని చేస్తోంది.

యం.వి. ఫౌండేషన్ ‘క్వాలిటి ఇంప్రూవ్మెంట్ ప్రోగ్రాం’ చేపట్టి, దానిలో భాగంగా గ్రంథాలయ బాధ్యతలు ‘మంచి పుస్తకం’ కి ఇచ్చారు. పాఠశాలలకి పుస్తకాల ఎంపిక, కొనుగోలు బాధ్యతలు ‘మంచి పుస్తకం’ చేపట్టింది. గ్రంథాలయాన్ని ఎలా నడపాలి, పుస్తకాలను పిల్లలకు ఎలా పరిచయం చేయాలి వంటి విషయాల గురించి వాలంటీర్లకు భాగ్యలక్ష్మి జిల్లాలకు వెళ్లి శిక్షణ ఇచ్చేది. ఆ క్రమంలో ప్రభుత్వ పాఠశాలలకు వెళ్లే పిల్లలు ఎలా ఉన్నారు, ఎలాంటి పుస్తకాలు చదవగలుగుతున్నారు వంటివి అవగాహన అయ్యాయని భాగ్యలక్ష్మి చెప్పారు.

‘మంచి పుస్తకం’ (2004 లో) ట్రస్ట్గా రిజిస్టర్ కాక ముందు ‘పుస్తకాలతో స్నేహం’ పేరున హైదరాబాదు బుక్ ఫెయిర్లో రెండు సంవత్సరాలు స్టాల్ పెట్టారు. ఆ సమయంలో అందుబాటులో ఉన్న బాల సాహిత్యాన్ని వివిధ ప్రచురణ సంస్థలు, వ్యక్తుల నుండి జమచేసి ప్రదర్శనలో ఉంచటం అనేది అప్పటికి ఒక కొత్త ప్రయత్నం.
పుస్తకాల ఎక్సిబిషన్ అంటే పెద్ద వాళ్ళకే అనే ఒకరకమైన మూస ధోరణిని మార్చింది మాత్రం ‘మంచిపుస్తకం’ ప్రయత్నాల వల్లనే అని కచ్చితంగా చెప్పుకోవాలి. ఆ తర్వాతే అనేక పుస్తక ప్రచురణ సంస్థలు పిల్లల పుస్తకాల మీద ప్రత్యేక శ్రద్ధ పెట్టడం పెరిగింది. ఆ సమయంలో పిల్లలకు కథల పుస్తకాలను పరిచయం చేయాలన్న ఆసక్తి తల్లిదండ్రులకు అంతగా లేదని, అప్పుడు దృష్టి ఎక్కువగా ‘చదువుల’ మీదే ఉండేదని, చందమామ లాంటి పత్రికలు, రష్యన్ అనువాద సాహిత్యం, బాలల అకాడమి ప్రచురణలు వంటివి గత స్మృతులుగా మారి ఒక లాంటి కొరత ఏర్పడింది అని గుర్తు చేసుకున్నారు ఇద్దరూ.
She talks about our joint publications, bilingual books, Soviet books, story cards, Pustakalato Sneham series, collaboration with TANA (which resulted in 49 original Telugu works), and books under sole distribution with us (CBT and Amar Chitra Katha).
‘మంచి పుస్తకం’ ప్రచురణ సంస్థ ఒక ప్రణాళికా బద్ధంగా జరిగిందా లేక పనిలో భాగంగా మార్చుకుంటూ వెళ్లారా అనే ప్రశ్నకు సమాధానం ఇస్తూ, “పుస్తకాల ప్రచురణ చేస్తున్నప్పుడు అవి పెద్ద ఫాంటుతో, బొమ్మలతో చైల్డ్ ఫ్రెండ్లీగా ఉండటానికి ప్రాధాన్యత ఇచ్చామని; తెలుగు, ఇంగ్షీషు బై-లింగ్వల్ పుస్తకాల ప్రచురణతో పాటు, సోవియట్ బాల సాహిత్యాన్ని మొదట్లో ఎక్కువగా తిరిగి ప్రచురించించామని; ఆ కథలు చాలా ఆకట్టుకునేవిగానూ, రంగుల బొమ్మలతో చాలా ఆకర్షణీయంగా ఉండటం అనేదానికి ప్రాధాన్య మిచ్చినట్లు” చెప్పారు. “అప్పటికే ఉన్న తెలుగు అనువాదాలలో భాషను సరళీకరించి, ఫాంట్ సైజ్ పెంచి ప్రచురించటం, కొత్తగా కొన్ని అనువాదాలను మళ్లీ చేయించటం, ప్రచురణ మొదలుపెట్టిన కొత్తలో సోవియట్ పుస్తకాలను ఎంచుకోవటం వల్ల రాయల్టీ వంటి చెల్లింపులు లేవు కాబట్టి ఆర్థికంగా నిలదొక్కుకోటానికి వీలయ్యిందని” వివరించారు. అంతేకాక ఆ సమయంలో ఎందరో అనువాదకులు, చిత్రకారులు ‘మంచి పుస్తకం’ నుండి ఎలాంటి రెమ్యునరేషన్ తీసుకోకుండా సహాయ సహకారాలు అందించటం కూడా ఈ ప్రయాణంలో చాలా విలువైన అంశంగా గుర్తు చేసుకున్నారు.
We share the role of Prof. Srinivas Chakravarty and of Vignana Prachuranalu in publishing science books in Telugu for children.
కథల పుస్తకాలు మాత్రమే కాకుండా పాపులర్ సైన్స్ పుస్తకాల ప్రచురణ ‘మంచి పుస్తకం’ చేపట్టటం చాలా ముఖ్యమైన విషయం. ఇందులో చెప్పుకోవలసింది ఐజాక్ అసిమోవ్ ‘ఎలా తెలుసుకున్నాం?’ సిరీస్. విజ్ఞాన శాస్త్రానికి సంబంధించిన పుస్తకాల అనువాదం, రాయటంలో చెన్నై ఐఐటి ప్రొఫెసర్ శ్రీనివాస చక్రవర్తి కృషి (అప్పట్లో ఎటువంటి ప్రతిఫలం ఆశించకుండానే) చేశారు.
‘మంచి పుస్తకం’ ప్రయాణంలో విజ్ఞాన ప్రచురణలతో (ఒకప్పుడు జనవిజ్ఞాన వేదిక) భాగస్వామ్యం చాలా కీలకమైనది. సైన్స్కి సంబంధించిన పుస్తకాలు ఈ రెండు సంస్థల ఉమ్మడి ప్రచురణలుగా వెలువడుతున్నాయి.
When Sajaya asked us about what makes Manchi Pustakam stand out, we spoke about our views on Telugu moral stories for children:
మిమ్మల్ని ఏ అంశాలు విభిన్నంగా నిలిపాయి అన్న ప్రశ్నకు సమాధానం ఇస్తూ “ఇదివరకు అనే కాదు, ఇప్పటికి కూడా నీతి కథలు, జీవిత చరిత్రలు, స్ఫూర్తిదాయక పుస్తకాలకు డిమాండ్ ఉంది. కధ చివరన నీతిని డిరైవ్ చేసి చెప్పే విధానం సరైంది కాదని ‘మంచి పుస్తకం’ గట్టిగా నమ్ముతోంది.
ఒక కథ చదివిన తరవాత దాని నుండి ఏం గ్రహిస్తారు, అసలు ఆ వయస్సులో గ్రహించాల్సింది ఏమైనా ఉందా అన్నది పిల్లలకే వదిలెయ్యాలి. ఒక కథలో ఒక్కొక్కరికి ఒక్కొక్క పార్శ్వం కనిపిస్తుంది. ఒక కథకి ఒక నీతిని మనం అంటగడితే పిల్లలు చూడగల అనేక కోణాలను కట్టడి చేసిన వాళ్లం అవుతాం. వాళ్ల ఊహల రెక్కలను విరిచేసినట్లు అవుతుంది. బాగా చదవటం నేర్చుకోవాలి, పుస్తకాలను పిల్లలు ఇష్టపడాలి అన్న ఉద్దేశాలతో ప్రచురించిన పుస్తకాలుగా ‘మంచి పుస్తకం’ కి ప్రత్యేక గుర్తింపు ఏర్పడింది.
We also had a chat about the current trends in Telugu children’s literature, attitude of writers and illustrators, the importance of government support, our bulk buyers and supporters, and our future goals.
చందమామ, దాని స్ఫూర్తితో ఒకప్పుడు వచ్చిన పత్రికలు బాల సాహిత్యానికి వేసిన మూసపోతలో చాలామంది రచయితలు ఉండిపోయారనేది వాస్తవం. మారిన సామాజిక నేపధ్యంలో ఈ కాలం పిల్లలకు కావలసినదానికి అనుగుణంగా బాల సాహిత్యంలో రావలసినంత మార్పు లేదని ‘మంచి పుస్తకం’ భావిస్తోంది. అంతేకాక, ఇప్పుడు చెప్పుకోదగిన పిల్లల పత్రికలు లేవు. దీనివల్ల పిల్లల కోసం రాసినది ప్రచురించటానికి ఎక్కువ అవకాశాలు లేవు.
పుస్తకాల ఎంపికను ఇంకా విస్తృతం చెయ్యాలని, ప్రణాళిక దశలో ఉండి పూర్తి చెయ్యాల్సిన పుస్తకాలు ఎప్పుడూ ఎదురు చూస్తూనే ఉంటాయనీ చెబుతూ, ఇదే పనిని ఇంకా బాగా, ఇంకా బాధ్యతతో కొనసాగిస్తామని చెబుతున్నారు.
